DAY 1

A Picture is worth a Thousand Words
Visual Literacy Facts:
Our brain process images 60,000 times faster than text. (3M)
Each eye has 1 million fibers to the brain; each ear has 30,000.
Our children are more visually literate than previous generations:
many express themselves using images.
They are able to weave together images, text, and sound naturally.

I was really glad to learn more about Flickr. I have used it quite a bit in the past, but this is a much more efficient and quick way to get the job done

I am really pleased about the opportunity to use the slide shows in my writing workshop. It will greatly enhance any lessons.
I am going to begin a literature circle with my 4 target students using the blog I created today.
Thank you for everything.

I loved the action words activity! I think it will be a phenomenal tool in my classroom when we start working on descriptive writing. I am going to get my blog up and running in my classroom this week!

It is a lot to absorb. I enjoyed the class. There are many possibilities. I will try to do a slide show and set up a Blog and find my way.

I am really excited about the opportunity to bring new and exciting technology to my students. I am excited about how "easy" it is going to be... at least so far!
I am going to try the slide-shows with word building using the idea of a picture is worth a 1000 words. I'm also anxious to get a group started on blogging!

I loved downloading the pics and making a slide show, or in my case several. I am passionate about writing and have all kinds of ideas for this. However, I struggled with the Blog. I am very interested in doing this with my students, they will love it, but WOW it is over my head. Cindy Loehr said she will come help me with Blogging this year. I imagine it will take me all year to figure this one out.

Thank you for today! This was wonderful. I had my big "a ha" with understanding blogs and creating the picture slide shows. I definitely plan on using picture prompts with flickr and I think I will use blogs as an opportunity for reading logs... we will see!

I am excited to have had so much instruction on blogs. I had planned on starting it soon, but have been a little hesitant. Now I feel so much better starting it out. I think my focus students may be more engaged in reading/writing when using technology.

Today, I learned a lot about how to blog. I'm planning to get my class started blogging this week and am hoping that interest level will be increased because of the use of technology and feedback from peers.

This was a day filled with info. and challenges. It is a lot of great information to use with the students. The slide show piece will be a great tool to engage the kids. It should make writing more connected. I would also like to read Boy Writers by Fletcher to help get a better scope with my target students.

It was very interesting and eye opening to learn about how much more difficult it is for boys to write. I am excited to try using some drawing to help the boys in my classroom with their writing. I also am going to implement the action pictures activity into my writing lesson next week.

My biggest "a ha" was how much boys and girls are wired differently. Some of the info about the chemical make up of boys gives me a better understanding of how some of my own students behave. They are not ADD, they are just boys. I can't wait to steal Karen's action slide show activity. What a powerful way to get every one involved!

I found the facts about boys vs girls very interesting. The facts will help me to better understand my students and how they learn. THANKS!

My biggest "a ha" is that boys need to have time to draw or use pictures to help with their writing. I need to be sure to allow time for that. I am planning on using pictures for them set up a story using story elements. I am also going to get my blog going ASAP and do a podcast! I can't wait!

My biggest "aha" was that boys start school much further behind girls than I thought. I liked that the motivational frameworks were included in the day. I am going to implement the action word activity and going to use comic life for vocabulary words. Thanks for the day!

Loved setting up the blog site, definitely will use this with my kids. Set up a day with Greg Torrence to intro it to my class. Also will use the photo slide show to intro my non-fiction writing unit. Very useful stuff.

The a ha for me today was learning how boy's brains go into rest state. I'm going to use the verb lesson with my class the week we get back from break. Thanks for the useful information!

I loved the articles and discussion about how boy-friendly teaching strategies are also BRAIN-friendly teaching strategies. I'm especially excited to incorporate my flickr slideshow into my students' descriptive writing assignment this week.

I too am glad after 20+ years of teaching to have a better understanding of why it has been so difficult to reach many of my boy students. Pictures and a blog will be my way to try to connect.

I will try to blog with my enrichment children. I will try to change my expectations for my boys as to how long they concentrate per sitting.
